If you're going to play a Sonic game before the third movie comes out, I'd highly recommend doing Sonic Adventure 2. It's one of the best sonic games out there, and since the third movie is taking inspiration from it specifically, it'll be loaded with references that'll enhance the experience as viewers. As a long time sonic fan, the past two sonic movies have done a wonderful job nodding to the game series while also bringing new elements to the table to keep things interesting, and I have no doubt they'll do the same again. Plus, it's a great introduction to Shadow, and once you get to know his character, you'll be 10x more hype for the movie when it releases!

The skip intro button left a few seconds of the song on there because the title screen changes slightly. The parts when Knuckles is jamming with Sonic and Tails, you can see Wade playing a different instrument every time.
That one bad guy was Rory McCann who was The Hound in Game of Thrones.

Sooooo the Flames of Disaster and the demon of ash and flames, aka Iblis? Yeah those are 06 references. Sonic 06 was infamously bad game, but the storylines werent totally awful-- we got some good characters from it, and the only villain that has bragging rights over Robotnik.
Iblis was one half of a time god that got sealed in a princess, if unleashed would destroy the world. Aaaand in this iteration Knuckles has the power of Iblis....I NEED THEM TO COME BACK TO THIS EVENTUALLY. WHEN MEPHILES?!
Sonic 1, 2, 3 (& Knuckles), CD, Mania, Adventure, Adventure 2, Unleashed, Colors, Mania and Frontiers are what I consider the top games overall, I’d try those games. 06 is one of the WORST, avoid it like the plague.

1) He calls he Pretzel Woman because Sonic calls her Pretzel Lady in the first movie. She does yoga.
2) Blues Brothers. They wear sunglasses the ENTIRE movie. Do it, react to it. I absolutely dare you. It is also the one of the first SNL movies. ?
3) Trust me, in a big enough family, dinner lasts an eternity. I can attest that any older sibling acts like a psycho on a power trip no matter the gender. I learned from a friend's family when I was younger how to make Jewish Penicillin. Hands down the best and simplest dish, completely worth the time. I make it often and consistently.
4) Was not expecting black market organ mules to come up in a Knuckles reaction. But I was expecting not to expect something so it doesn't count. Anyhoo, Reno and Atlantic City were used a crapton in movies because they were literally a knock off Vegas that were accessible to more people and cheaper to go to.
5) I have yet to find something Carey Elwes is in that he isn't the rizzmaster of the scene, even when he is being the scumbag. Ella Enchanted and Twister are the closest I've found.
6) Bowling is such a weird game for people to flex on. Like, it's a kids birthday party game. The buyer's character feels like a Whiplash from Iron Man 2 ripoff.

If you want the "canon" video game story leading into Adventure 2 then go with Sonic Origins's story mode then Sonic Adventure 1 and then Sonic Adventure 2

Since they changed it a bit you should play through the first Sonic Adventure game. Knuckles backstory is slightly different and absolutely wild. Also the references were insane that throughout the show, especially the one from the bowling commentators after the fight.
