Wicked is great and all but when are we wacthing the almighty "BASEketball"
yall should watch THE WIZ
The 'wizard' of Oz was always a magician. Theatricality and deception
I would also lovee more musical watches from you guys! Especially In The Heights, I think you guys would love that! Its about gentrification in NYC.
Fun fact, in the book "The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West", Elphaba kisses Glinda TWICE saying "Hold out if you can" and "Hold out, my sweet". Also they cut FOURTY MINUTES TO AN HOUR of Glinda and Elphaba being together. There was a scene where Glinda was training magic with Elphaba and a whole scene where they're talking in the train...
The musical is indeed Act I and Act II which are the two movies. Yes, we fans of the musical know what's still to come, we just don't know how they're going to show it. We expect great things.
The BOOK itself is the bridge between the works of L. Frank Baum, the author who wrote the entire (deranged AF) original series of Oz. In the song Popular when Galinda opens the book with a weird old fashioned etching plate of a round faced man with frizzy hair and a madness to him? That was L. Frank Baum. So the book Wicked jumped on the bandwagon of the 90s when we became fascinated with a good prequel or villain backstory which flips the villain into a misunderstood hero. AND Gregory Maguire, the author, he really did bridge the absolute fucking insanity of the original Oz series of stories with all of their deranged dementia so that it expanded the story of the Wicked Witch in a most satisfying way.
In the musical, there's a cameo appearance in One Short Day In the Emerald City number by the woman who adapted Wicked the book into Wicked the Musical. Her name is Winnie Holzman. After Oz appears in the water vapor hologram saying "Omaha" (which is where the Wizard was from, he was telling them he was from Omaha and they thought he was speaking the ancient language and must be a Wizard), anyway after Omaha they zoom in on one of the women in the crowd saying "he can read it! He must be a Wizard!", and that is Winnie Holzman's cameo.
If you go back to read the book, you will understand just how much Winnie reworked things to be as light and yet as faithful to Oz as a concept as the musical and movie could make happen.
Oh, and when Maguire wrote Wicked the book originally, he scoured the notes of Baum to try and find any mention or hint at the name of the Wicked Witch, but he never gave her one (and to be fair, Baum went on and wrote dozens of fever dream Oz books so like, the Wicked Witch was barely a blip to him in the prologue). So it was Gregory Maguire who gave the witch her name, and he made it by combining and playing with the name of the original author. So from L. Frank Baum we get El-pha-ba.
PLEASE WATCH BRIDGERTON OMG & Queen Charlotte
I second this. Bridgerton is actually a worthy series with much for the bro-verse to get out of it. Far more DudeBro reactors than Sorta Stupid have watched and gotten way into Bridgerton/Queen Charlotte.
In the case of Wicked, they converted all of their sets into accoustically balanced and mic'd sound stages. There is only some studio work and dubbing, but when you see the ensemble singing in a location with a lead, the audio you hear is the actual recorded performance. There's a YouTube video all about the sound production genius of Wicked. They basically staged the musical on a hollywood sound stage and only dubbed in select bits.
Now that I’ve finally watched great reaction! Wicked is one of my favorite musicals and I love the Wizard of Oz! I would love for you to react to the Wizard of Oz before part 2 of Wicked. No spoilers for Part 2 but there’s a lot of plot in Part 2 that assumes you’re familiar with the Wizard of Oz that you might miss otherwise. Because Part 2 moves quick through some of the Wizard of Oz plot points.
YES SEAN KNOWS PEAK You guys need to watch the planet of the apes trilogy. So damn good, Caesar has become one of my favorite characters in fiction
Please watch planet of the apes, those first 3 movies were literally peak cinema
Def need more musical reactions from you guys!
Great reaction as always, if interested Baily Sarian on youtube posted a dark history on wizard of oz that covers all the stuff that happened and the rumours too
I second you guy watching the planet of the apes series
Fun fact Cynthia (ELPHABA) sang while she did the broom scene in the air while being swung around the room! What you hear in Defying Gravity is her live voice while doing all those stunts! She is a powerhouse!
i've seen wicked twice on broadway. first time we were in the rafters, far from the stage but it was still an awesome experience. but the SECOND time, we were like 3 rows from the front and OOOO BOY that was so fucking cool! nothing comes close to that experience, but this movie was still very good and i found stuck true to the source material very well!
Fun fact, the girls who Bree recognized from glee played the original elphaba and Glinda in wicked on broadway
the dance scene always give me chills. Glinda is still stuck up, but i was not expecting that from her
Since y'all like musicals, you should watch the show Crazy Ex Girlfriend!
This is actually a pretty unique musical because both Ariana and Cynthia recorded their vocals live on set.
Wicked the musical is a combination of part 1 and for good. however there were many complaints about how the second act of the play (which would be For Good) was rushed, the first act (part 1) has always been stronger SO for both of the movies theres things that has been added/changed. for instance in For Good theyre adding two new songs, a solo song for Glinda and a solo song for Elphaba. the original musical runtime is 2 hours and 25 minutes, which is about the length of the first movie!
Hey can you guys react to pacific rim by Guillermo del Toro
"Illusions Michael! A trick is something a whore does for money...or candy!"
I’d be down to see you guys react to the original wizard of oz, but I’d be sooo Down for you guys to react to the planet of the apes trilogy it’s incredible one of my favorite trilogies
Please with musicals don't pause so much, or atleast rewind. It ruins the build up :(
It’s better than talking through the song though right? Idk I think I prefer the pausing so i don’t miss stuff
I'm not as big a Wicked fan as the other theater kids but there is no denying that Defying Gravity is a top ten all-time Broadway banger.
Yes watch bridgerton pls
Definitely recommend doing The Wizard of Oz. And yes we did see Madame Morrible use magic, she said weather is her specialty + she made the rain go away.
I.
Just looked it up because of your discussion with the water in the book. She does have an allergy and she bathes using essential oils. But in the play and I'm guessing in the movie as well. It's a myth
And when morable was talking about her getting wet. Before going to see the wizard she met like getting ruined like her outfit. Her whole look not melting in the rain
Well also in the books, no one else knew she had an allergy. So the line in the movie yes is just about her outfit, but it's also foreshadowing for what we all know will happen because it happens in the original Wizard of Oz movie
So all the singing is done while filming. John M. Chu had microphones hidden all over the set to pick up the sound but it is all done live
Out running him, out rolling him needs to be a damn Youtube short!
I have been waiting so long for you guys to cover this one! One of my favorite movies of last year. Can't wait for part 2!!
eric missed the fact people were literally were asking why shes so wicked....lol
You guys should really react to 'The Wizard of Oz'
2:20:20 “You will benefit too, dearie.” Anyone who’s ever seen Once Upon a Time would laugh at that line. Dearie.
Wicked part 1 covers the musical up to the intermission. For Good is everything after the intermission in the musical.
You guys should watch the maleficent movies
And Narnia
Glinda and her friends planned to embarass her at the party. She said about the hat, "I'd give it away, but I don't hate anyone that much." Then, lightbulbs. Lol. That's why it was so powerful when Glinda felt guilty af and they danced in public.
yessss I'm so happy you guys are finally watching this film and for a person who never read the book or seen the Broadway musical I absolutely loved it from the characters, to the directing, to the scenary, to the ACTING, and of course the SOUNDTRACK Ariana and Cythnia are freaking phenomenal and are just powerhouses and completely carry the film I love it so much and cannot wait for part this Friday ❤️❤️❤️
12:18 Erik...she was asked directly why she was wicked. Lack of oxygen in the bubble? I think you had too much lol
Yes the musical is both movies together. It’s just act 1 and act 2. We have been in a year long intermission.
The musical is both movie one and movie two but it's significantly shorter in length I believe only an hour and a half (but don't quote me) and the book is far more explicit than both the movies and stage musical
Yes, the play is the same as the movie. They give you an intermission which is where the to be continued was placed at the end of this one. As for the books there is I believe 5 in total, i think. The first book which is Wicked, and the rest is just the continuation of the story after the events of Wicked.
Someone please tell Ruff that the wizard being her father is not a theory its true the guy at the beginning even sounded exactly like Jeff golblums wizard.
I love how the first hint that Bree was bringing it up. Sean and Erik basically said "SHUT UP WOMAN!" Lol
I mean I don’t actually know that it was just an extremely educated guess as he was literally drinking the green liquid? but okay lol
I'm memeing on the sexist Sean joke lol. But if everything the wizard uses is green then why not his aphrodisiac being green not support it?
I'm so freaking happy y'all reacted to this
Her sister got crushed by the house which is the girl in the wheelchair in this movie
Come on… they stated multiple times they don’t know the source material. Thats a spoiler for the second movie.
i love the movie but i will forever not understand how they changed the line in the song no one morns the wicked (the opening number) when elphaba was born her father sings "it's uncanny its obscene" but in the original musical her father sings "it's atrocious its obscene" and to me the intention changes slightly of her fathers immediate hatred of her...
They changed it because it’s her nanny bear who sings the line, not her father. The animal helping deliver her always said “it’s atrocious,” but she has a close relationship with her nanny here, so it wouldn’t make sense.
What I will say is that both Glinda and Elphie at their core are good and they are forever bonded and nothing will break their friendship. They understand each others choices and accept their differences. It’s easy for Elphie to become the villain because she’s always been on the outskirts of society. Glinda grew up rich and with the understanding of perception and influence. Also part 2 will explain why Glinda was celebrating elphabas death in the beginning. Also both Ariana and Cynthia sang live for the movie.
Madam Morrible did magic when it was starting to rain. She got rid of the rain clouds.
I like to raise you high is funny when you watch this with Sorta Stupid.
Hadn’t actually seen it before, but this was a great watch!!
Seconding Sean on you guys watching the recent Planet of the Apes series. The evolution of those movies is awesome!!
I've never seen anyone watch Wicked and recognized both Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, but have abolutely no idea that they played Glinda and Elphaba in the original broadway musical. Not a knock, just interesting to see.
Yeah, the first movie adapts the first act, the second movie adapts the second act. The whole musical version runs for rougly the same length as the first movie, so they did add a LOT of new/different things sometimes for better, sometimes for worse, as with all adaptations.
Also, I'm DEFINITELY with Bree on this one, you guys should 100% watch the Wizard of Oz, it's such a wonderful and iconic movie with some equally iconic songs.
And yes (sorry, just getting to this part of the reaction!) Wicked the musical is the first and second movie combined (though the second movie will apparently have a couple new songs). Where we ended in this movie is intermission.
The Wicked play does follow with the movie. part 1 and 2!
Fun fact, all the songs are done live!
Also I absolutely think Glinda would have gone with her if the anxiety didn’t take over. I mean, she jumped in the balloon with her. The problem is Elphaba is literally making herself an enemy of the state. This would be terrifying for anyone, but Glinda has always utilized her people skills as her greatest weapon. Without that, I’m sure she’d feel pretty helpless.
iirc in the musical it was presented a bit better. As in Galinda wanted to help from the inside by going along with them but Elphiba wanted to defy them outwardly. I may be misremembering that though and it's not clarified in that scene either in the broadway version.
i would LOVE if you guys reacted to bridgerton, its such an interesting series and im sure everyone would warmup to it eventually too
It surprises me that there’s so much confusion over a prequel being told as a flashback. I just feel like framing devices like that are really common, yet I’ve seen multiple reactors confused by it.
The first movie is act 1 and the second movie is act 2. A lot of people including myself had a problem with the pacing of act 2 which is why we are glad they broke the movie into parts
Yay! Can’t wait to watch this later, I’m seeing part 2 tonight!
1:14:12 OH MY GOD, LMFAOOO
They actually sang live for this movie, so they weren’t singing and dancing silently here, it was all real 😊 what you hear in the movie was live on set!
00:32:16 fun fact, the original broadway actress for Elphaba from 2003 is Idina Menzel, which is also the voice actress of Elsa in Frozen
One of the best things about this movie is that all the singing was done live on set, and there's no ADR or dubbing after the fact.
They should react to Frankenstein next!
Is it just me or is the quality of the video lower?
Try putting the video setting to high quality ( sometimes it switches to lower automatically)
I like this movie, but I will always find it so weird how Disney is trying to redeem their villains very weird what they’re trying to tell children that villains are not all bad. Just look at their origin story lol I prefer them being villains personally b
This book is much older than any of the other Disney movies that give villains sympathetic backgrounds
And this actually isn't even Disney so there's that too lol
Side note: this is a weird thing to say about a movie about racism and classism and it's societal effects
(Wizar of Oz is also not Disney)
Wicked isn't Disney and is from the mid/early 90s, so wtf are you talking about?🤨
yeeeeeeeeees, i am soooooo happy
I’m so glad yall watched this! I realized as time went on that yall were gonna wait until it got closer to Wicked For Good releasing and I’m glad I was right.
I agree, it is more enjoyable to watch everything in a row or close together!
I haven’t watched the reaction yet but I’m so happy you guys watched it! 🤗
I'm so happy you guys watched this holy shit
And the week the second part comes out, which y’all are gonna have to wait to watch in like March.
.....yes that is how time and release schedules work? What is your point? What a weird thing to respond with under a positive comment.
