   Hei i have said it before and i can say it again. YES THERE IS A PLOT IN THIS SHOW. Many people dont get it but there is lore and plot. But it's scattered everywhere by the creators so the fans didn't get it at first watch of the show. The plot start in season 3. The important info and lore in episodes is not so easy to remember with all the crazy stuff. But after you've finished watching the show, I can explain The**** to you.

   Boom it's actually the opposite, 2x40 marks a shift in Gumball's humor going forward. As dramatic as the shift in season 2 vs 1's. From this point onward it's pretty much all gold.

   I've watched through all of gumball twice before now and only now did I realize the finale served a double purpose. Beyond just being a really good meta episode it is literally the introduction of consequences. The show runners told us that there would now be continuity and consequences for some stuff by having an episode about introducing it to the characters and world of the show. that's brilliant.
