I'm confused because I don't know if it's a complaint about the translation or just genuine lack of awareness that the subs are for the japanese version and not the localized american. I watch in dub with japanese subs to get the full picture but I see comments also saying subs are 'wrong'. There are english subs. I thought it was a conscious choice not to use them but after complaints across multiple movies, subs are switchable

Ya know instead of complaining about the subtitles why don't you just not have them on when you're watching these movies.
Also nobody watches movies or TV shows with subtitles on most people watch without them unless you are watching the anime in sub watching a Kdrama or you have a hard time hearing.
I do agree with your reaction to the ending. Same way I felt of the Broly movie first time I watched that one. The endings to some of these movies are underwhelming but some of the things that happen before then is awesome, so, all in all fun movies that could be better.
I mean I do wanna say the subtitles aren't wrong the Dubs from this time are incredibly inaccurate at times. And these old OVA films, even if non canon could really use the DBZ Kai treatment where they are properly redubbed.
All they have to do is not have the subtitles on that simple.

Goku can’t use the spirit bomb when he’s in Super Saiyan form, he needs to be in his normal/base form to use the spirit bomb. But he can put super saiyan energy into a spirit bomb after already throwing it towards his enemy.

Exactly at 00:34:11 your heads almost were Goku's and Vegeta's heads (you just needed a bit more of a close up to the face)
Something pretty cool about the Z movies was just the brutal impacts of blows. When they get hit you can just feel that impact this is true for dbz too. But I find these impact blows apperant in movies like slug, world strongest, 13 and bojack along with the choreography.

The reason the movies aren't canon is because they don't fit into the timeline of DBZ like with this movie, Dende is on Kami's lookout which happens in the week before the Cell Games but Gohan and Goku would be in their super Saiyan forms but this design of Gohan is before he goes in the time chamber and it can't be after the Cell games because Goku would be dead.
Dbz isnt like dbz abridged at all, its your shitty dub that makes it that way
I hope you aren't talking about the Funimation Dub because it is not shitty not at all, in fact, that is best version that you should watch DBZ in.
Yes im talking about the funimation dub the dialogues they make no sense, the characters say different thing from the original (jap) and to be onest with you they are cringy too
The Funimation dub of dbz does have it's own set of problems. There was all the intentional dialogue changes, the poor choices in translation, all the added dialogue that was never in the original sub. It's why the subtitles don't match the audio to the point where at some times it's a completely different conversation. There's also the fact the the funimation dub never adapted Goku's accent. He's supposed to have a strong southern hick-folk accent, with Chi Chi having an even stronger accent.
An example of changed dialogue: In the funimation dub of the scene where Goku stops Krillin from killing Vegeta Goku says," Show him what it means to be merciful" which is far from what he actually said. Goku asked krillin to spare Vegeta because he wanted to be able to fight Vegeta again. It was supposed to be Goku making a selfish request because he thought Vegeta dying there would've been a waste. He literally says, "when I saw him nearly dead there, I thought to myself... "What a waste"".
Another Example is Goku's "I Am" Speech to Frieza. The Z dub gives a completely different speech from the Japanese dub, which I don't feel like typing out.
You can enjoy the Funimation dub of dbz but you can't ignore it's problems. They tried too often to turn Goku into a Superman type Hero of Justice to point of having him literally call himself "The Hope of the Universe" in their version of the "I Am" speech. To my knowledge and recollection Goku has never called himself the hope of anything in any of the canon media
