   BTW just pre-emptively letting you know that Mr. Popo is based on a Buddhist/Hindu deity named "Mahakala". Look up a picture of him and you'll instantly see the resemblance. For whatever reason Mr. Popo's outfit and turban seems to go over people's heads.

    There was a ton of filler during this arc. Goku meeting with

    Princess Snake, Goku going to Hell, Gohan finding a group of orphans and

    teaming up with them, Gohan going home, only for the last minute to

    return to his survival training, etc.

    Filler

    was always done because a weekly show easily can burn through multiple

    chapters in an episode depending upon things, and even a weekly manga

    can't match that pace.
