I'd like to point out aang is 12, and katara is 16 yet he is incredibly pushy.

Aang is 12 and katara is 14 throughout the show. that age gap would be insane

Zuko, motherfucker, Aang would be still sitting right next to you if you let him sit right next to Katara. You may be one of the best characters ever written but you're the worst wingman.

Speaking of solid British comedy shows at the end there, the show BBC Ghosts is five seasons (7 eps each) and it's so so good. It's about a woman who can see ghosts living in an extremely old house full of ghosts from different eras and backgrounds. It's super funny and heartfelt and I think you guys would enjoy it! Plus it's a fairly short watch

There's an American sitcom with the same premise also called Ghosts.

The discussion you guys had at the end about how this show feels planned throughout and is a product of a different era is accurate. Mind you, as you go into Korra, that show was made in the more current media environment, and some of the bumpier elements stem from that (nickelodeon actually fucked with production quite a bit). That being said, it's still an awesome show and season 3 in particular had the show runners pulling off a mastery of tv akin to the original series. I'm really looking forward to you guys' reaction to it! And once you're done, since Boom likes reading, the avatar Kyoshi and avatar Yangchen books are amazing, highly recommend

A few fun facts about this episode:

This episode was the final episode prior to the finale airing all four parts. It was part of a weeklong event called Countdown to the Comet where the last six (brand-new at the time) episodes (starting with "The Western Air Temple") aired, one per night. (Multi-part episodes like "The Boiling Rock" aired all parts on the same night.) The next episode, the four-part finale, aired the following night as a 2-hour TV movie.

The poster Sokka shows the group is based on the Book 1 DVD boxart, and the play's title is a reference to the title of the premiere episode.

Dante Bosco's (Zuko) older brother Derek voiced Play Zuko. Jennie Kwan (Suki) voiced Play Yue.

The scene where Play Katara and Play Zuko are imprisoned in Ba Sing Se together is a reference to the Zutara shippers in the fanbase.

The last scene of the episode ("That wasn't a good play." ... "But the effects were decent.") may have been a reference by the episode's writers to the upcoming movie, according to the DVD commentary from the show's creators.

You guessed it: Play Sokka saying "let's keep flying" is indeed a reference to the fanbase saying the episode was pointless. Also, the audience falling asleep during "The Drill" is a reference to a vocal part of the fanbase saying the episode was boring.

The fanbase that said the drill was boring must be in the minority, because I've never seen anyone say that and it seems like most people enjoy that episode ?.

It's a nice theory, but the timing doesn't work at all. Ember Island Players ran in 2008. While development on the movie began in 2007, they were still in pre-production in 2008 and filming didn't start until 2009. Also, while I've only seen clips of the movie (have never been able to bring myself to actually watch even a reaction to it), in the clips I *have* seen, the effects were anything but decent.

I think one of my favorite observations is that Toph cannot feel the performance from her seat, so she has to strain to listen. Part of why she is absolutely THRILLED by her actor shouting loudly is because it’s the most action she’s gotten to experience the whole play!

Finally, my years of pent up Zutara shipping have a moment to pay off!

The reason for the little moment with Zuko, Katara, and Aang, is because during the course of the show the Zuko x Katara ship became OVERWHELMINGLY the most popular ship. By a large margin. So it's kind of a small nod to that community, despite our complete lack of standing at this point in the show lol.

    Great video.

this episode is so amazing and a genius recap but i feel like that katara and aang non-consensual kiss— like it feels so unnecessary and uncomfortable. it’s kinda just forgotten about by the end of the episode because of all their other problems so i don’t get why it was needed :((

It was a common trope of popular shows at the time where the main lead would kiss the romance interest suddenly (and typically it was spun as a good thing and the girl would kiss them back). I wonder if the scene was added because the writers wanted to show what would actually happen if you go around doing that as a lesson for the kiddos.

I was going to save this for the finale, but then Boom brought up "shows not being designed to end." I feel this is useful information to have going in to Korra.

Originally, Legend of Korra was not supposed to be a "sequel series." It was purely an epilogue. Michael and Bryan got greenlit for 1 season to tell a short story of the next Avatar as an epilogue to Avatar. However, after the 2nd or 3rd episode, Nickelodeon came back and said, "Show's doing really well, we're greenlighting you for 3 more seasons." From there, Michael and Bryan had to write 3 whole seasons to continue a show that basically ended. Season 2 premiered a year later and...people have criticisms, but when you take this into account, the flaws are understandable. There's a lot more jerking around Nickelodeon did to the show, but I'll share those stories when we actually get into it (what they did to season 4 should be criminal).

Actually, the jerking around with the seasons was worse. Season 2 of Korra was greenlit as the actual final END to Korra, then after Season 2 was doing well (much the same case as with Season 1), Nicklodeon ordered season 3 and 4 together.

This is in my opinion the cleverest way to recap a series that I've ever seen. It covers everything just before the end, pokes fun at itself, is a nice reprieve from all the intensity of the last few episodes, and has an underlying message to the audience about propaganda and how the public's perception can be easily twisted through the lens of blind patriotism. It's brilliant.

This is a great episode about propaganda because u see the way they fill information they dont know or spin what happened.

Damn it, only Boom noticed the best part of the episode..... they made fun of The Great Divide! ? That's literally the best joke in the show because the writers were so self aware with the fact that that episode isn't loved and they straight up skipped over it in the play ? Thats perfect comedy that transcends the show.

This show came out when I was 5 and I was there to watch the very first episode. Avatar is still my absolute favorite show and I rewatch it often. I feel like it shaped me as a person and has a lot of themes that children can benefit from seeing. My cousin's husband started showing Avatar to their 3 year old recently and she absolutely loves it too. Avatar is for any age!

1- Actually they explained that the playwrite asked the different people that Gaang came across to collect source material for the play.

2- Jet is dead. The writers confirmed it later. Of course Nick wasn't going to let them be explicit with it.

the most important thing to remember when yall watch the finale is that the show's full title is the most important thing to consider, i only say that because a lot of people seem to forget that part
