Say what you will about the Fire Nation. They seem to be the only nation that employs female soldiers. Even the Kyoshi Warriors are just an independent tribe, it’s forbidden to teach women Waterbending, and the Air Nomads get a pass because they didn’t have an army. Fire Nation armies are full of women
I think they severely underestimate just how strong Ozai is ? They've seen how potent Azula was through the series, and Ozai clears her
People usually expect Zuko to fight Ozai and they're wrong but they get something 1000 times better in return.
On top of that Aang still can't use the avatar state and Ozai isn't some weak character he's obviously gonna be very strong (he shot lightning in less than a second if you guys think Aang can handle that, then your crazy) plus Azula is there and she's strong as well, so again staying to would be a dumb risky move.
Them staying to fight would be way to risky because if Aang gets captured at the fire nation capital, then that is game over, but because Aang escaped then they have another chance win, plus you forget Aang still needs to learn fire bending, so it wouldn’t make sense to beat Ozai with Aang only knowing 3 out of the 4 elements.
Assuming Ozai is even close to or maybe even better than Iroh considering they probably had similar training staying and fighting him even with Sokka and Toph probably would not go well.
Staying to fight, at that point, is too risky. If Aang gets captured at the Fire Nation capital, it's over for everyone. And given the situation, the chances of that happening are way too big. They can't risk losing the world's best chance of stopping the Fire Nation. But with Aang escaping, there is still hope they can win some other day.
So wild fun fact. The female prison guard is voiced by Serena Williams because she mentioned that she really liked the show in a interview of something during book 2

Imagine Aang facing Ozai before learning lightning redirection from Zuko. The show would be LOK already.

Everyone forgets that THE EARTH KING TOLD AZULA THE ENTIRE INVASION PLAN when they were disguised as Kyoshi Warriors back at the end of Book 2. The Fire Nation knew the invasion was coming.
And TBH even if you didn’t know but you’re the leader of a militarized nation fighting two nations at once and you know you’ll be totally powerless on a specific day but you’re still not preparing for an invasion on that date, you deserve to be conquered.

You guys mention how insane it is that they used waterbending to invent submarines and torpedos, but most of humanity's craziest inventions are a product of the threat of war. And the first time they're used in real life they seem insane.
