   The show is LITERALLY called Avatar: The Last Airbender...

      Back when the series premiered the first two episodes were released as an hour long special, so the intro where Katara says Aang is the Avatar obviously wasn't there.

      it also doesn't help that they literally discussed aang using waterbending to freeze himself and some how still weren't sure if the main character was the avatar

         To be fair, they at the time thought that some people could do multiple elements, just never all 4. So Aang being both a water and air bender but not the avatar in this instance wasn't out of their logic.

   Man I wish I knew about these reactions sooner and I know it's too late to make any difference, But yeah they stated like a dozen times in the first episode that the avatar is supposed to be an airbender and even showed aang using more than one element In the flashback

   I think the cool thing is by the end of the series sokka could realistically contend with zuko in a fair duel.
