Since we’re closish to caught up, I think y’all should know that “Keep moving forward” was kinda a catch phrase of Monty Oum, the series creator that passed between volumes 2 and 3. You may also remember that DBZA’s History of Trunks was dedicated to him.

The amount of set up in Vol 4&5 is so good. The other volumes wouldn’t have been as good if it wasn’t for Vol 4&5. It’s true that there is less fights but I honestly think the trade off is worth it

So I think the reason 5 is considered the weakest is because it is the hardest to rewatch. ALL OTHER VOLUMES have a watch as movie mode on the blu ray but Volume 5 is the sole exception. I makes casually watching the whole volume a pain....
Honestly I think 1 is the weakest but that is because it had almost no budget and it was setting up future plot points...
All volumes are a 7 or above in my book and 3, 7, 8, & 9 are all 10s! (6 is a solid 9 but it grows on me more with each rewatch so it may be a 10 the next time I watch it)

Now that the reveal is here, I can share the other real world inspiration for Ozpin, Raven, and Qrow!
Ozpin's alternate inspo is taken from Odin from Norse Mythology. He notoriously had two birds following him around, two Raven's named Huginn and Muginn. Huginn means "Thought", and Muninn means "Mind". These two birds traveled over Midgard (Earth) to gather information, which they then gave to Odin.
Their last name, Branwen, is also from Norse mythology, but ALSO means "blessed white raven/crow".
Raven specifically is Huginn, while Qrow is Muginn. The implications in this episode is that Ozpin... "granted" Raven and Qrow bird forms to help with their travels, most likely to gather information regarding Salem as well as keeping an eye on others, and both reacted differently to it. Qrow obviously reacted positively, continuing to follow Ozpin and be devout to him, yet also falling into alcoholism to cope with what he's seen and experienced. Meanwhile, Raven saw the horrors of the world, listened to the truth of the past, and fled. She's running for her life, terrified of the knowledge that's been granted to her.
While we don't really know much about what them being able to turn into birds means, we also don't know if there are any repercusions to it. We don't know if there was a cost to this.
From what I recall they have an outline of how long the story will go and story details left behind by Monty before he passed. Volume 5 is definitely a slower paced volume especially waiting week to week. At this period as well Rooster Teeth was making lots of animated projects which affected the budget of this season in particular.
I stand by seasons 4 and 5 being some of my favorites. Love me some lore and progression to the stakes!
You guys should watch the World of Remnant videos, they bring some good background lore and history to the world, that I feel enhances the show. Helps by having background context to the tension between kingdoms and faunus and many other interesting things about the world they live in and nothing is a spoiler.
I mean Raven has no reason to complain her and her brother were given the ability to turn into birds with no downsides
I don't like Raven but I don't think we can ignore the possibility that the process might not have been easy or smooth....usually in tropes like these, it rarely was a nice process. Though, who knows, maybe RWBY will do it differently
I think her issue is more built around Ozpin making her and Qrow his eyes and ears and ergo more privy to the full scope of things and spoilers spoilers you know but things aren't ideal and that full understanding of the stakes and scope can make one very fearful and hopeless. The turning into birds things is just sort of an indelible physical reminder of their initiation into that higher responsibility and understanding. Also being permanently marked by magic in a world where that's not believed to be a thing is probably just weird on a fundamental, existential sense.
I think Raven was only making it sound bad so Yang and Weiss would distrust Oz.
